Broad College Finance Department hosts the Michigan Corporate Finance Competition
The Broad College Finance Department was proud to host the second annual Michigan Corporate Finance Competition, sponsored by BP. This case competition was held in the prestigious Edward J. Minskoff Pavilion and offered a prize pool of $4,000.
The event took place over a 72-hour period, culminating in a pitch presentation to three judges. The case was carefully selected by Tom Rimer, fixed-term faculty of finance. Special thanks to the judges: Amanda Selensky (GM), Kyle Hool (GM) and Hao Jiang, A.J. Pasant Fellow of Finance.
Dave Hawthorne, director of the Financial Markets Institute (FMI), applauds the finance department and BP. He said, “The experience is invaluable by helping students get comfortable with the uncomfortable.”
Congratulations to the first-place team, which consisted of four seniors from FMI: Yatin Sareen (JP Morgan), Brian Mulligan (Houlihan Lokey), John Biberstein (Aptiv) and Maxwell Frank (undecided). They took home a check for $2,000!
We also want to thank the event organizers, Matt England, Lauren Dowd and Will Smalley. Thanks to their hard work and dedication, this event was a complete success.
The finance department and FMI are taking an aggressive approach to finance competitions. As department chairperson Andrei Simonov said, “There is no better experience for students than to compete as a team and present in front of a group of judges. Competitions allow students to apply academic training to a real-world situation in a stressful environment. Basically, it is about what is left out of education when the exams are behind. In addition, competitions help students develop leadership, communication and management skills.”
Stay tuned for our next competitions, including the ACG Cup, the Venture Capital Investment Competition and the National Investment Banking Competition.
